Insider Shares Bad News for Fans Expecting Far Cry 7 in 2025

Summary

  • Far Cry 7 has reportedly been internally delayed from 2025 to 2026.
  • Ubisoft is rumored to be developing a new mainline game in the series alongside a standalone multiplayer Far Cry game.
  • Both new Far Cry games will reportedly feature a massive overhaul to movement and a new inventory and looting system.

An industry insider has shared an update on the rumored Far Cry 7, revealing that the upcoming entry in Ubisoft’s popular open-world series has been internally delayed from 2025 to 2026. Far Cry 7 has yet to be confirmed by Ubisoft, but previous reports claim that the next entry is now in development alongside a Far Cry multiplayer game, which is currently being worked on under the codename Maverick and is an extraction-based shooter.

Ubisoft is known for some of the biggest series in gaming, including Far Cry, Assassin’s Creed, Splinter Cell, Rainbow Six, Just Dance, and many more. But, like many other studios in 2024, Ubisoft has cut hundreds of job roles in recent months, with the latest round of layoffs coming as the studio announced it would be shutting down XDefiant, a free-to-play first-person shooter released in May 2024. New downloads and registrations are now unavailable, but existing players can still experience XDefiant until its official shutdown on June 3, 2025.

Ubisoft is promising a big shift in direction for how Assassin’s Creed will move forward, and if it lands, then Far Cry could do the same.

Far Cry 7 Reportedly Internally Delayed

XDefiant‘s shutdown comes as industry analysts predict massive changes for Ubisoft in 2025, with the company reportedly facing privatization and a major strategic shift. As 2025 is seemingly becoming a vital year for the company, Ubisoft has reportedly delayed the next Far Cry game into 2026, according to a new report from Insider Gaming’s Tom Henderson. Although Ubisoft has a lot going on business-wise, Far Cry 7‘s delay is apparently due to “complexities in development.” It was previously reported that the title was aiming for a Fall 2025 release but has now been pushed back to 2026.

Henderson’s report also reveals some major changes for the series, with a movement overhaul also rumored to be in the works for the new installment and the standalone multiplayer Far Cry title. According to inside sources, both games will include tactical sprinting, sliding, vaulting, and more. There will also be other aspects, such as a new inventory and looting system, shared between Far Cry 7 and the standalone multiplayer game as both titles originated from the same game.

It’s claimed that Ubisoft Montreal and Far Cry 7‘s other supporting studios are “optimistic” about the title, but there are “some concerns” over Far Cry‘s extraction-based title due to recent events at the publisher. Although some big changes are going on behind the scenes at Ubisoft and Far Cry 7‘s internal delay reportedly being due to development complexities, it follows multiple other studios that are reportedly delaying titles from 2025 due to Grand Theft Auto 6. The monumental title is scheduled to launch in Fall 2025, but its release is expected to be so big that publishers are reportedly delaying their games to avoid competing with Rockstar’s highly-anticipated title.
